Four Years Before the Outbreak

The laboratory was silent except for rain against the windows.

Vaelric sat beneath the white light of the laboratory lamp.

The old document remained open:

THE ZERO-STATE HYPOTHESIS

He had spent the entire night studying it.

Beside it were medical textbooks, archived research papers, temperature-regulation studies, and handwritten calculations.

Vaelric: If the hypothesis is biologically possible…

He began writing.

Core temperature.

Metabolic activity.

Peripheral circulation.

Cellular energy production.

Inflammatory response.

He connected them.

Vaelric: The body doesn't have one temperature system. It has several systems constantly communicating with each other.

He studied the hypothalamus, blood vessels, metabolism, and immune signaling.

Vaelric: If one signal becomes abnormal, the others could compensate.

He drew another line.

Vaelric: And eventually compensate for something that isn't actually happening.

A doctor entered the laboratory.

Doctor: You're still here?

Vaelric: I found something.

Doctor: A mechanism isn't a treatment.

Vaelric: I know.

Doctor: And an old hypothesis isn't evidence.

Vaelric: I know that too.

The doctor warned him about confusing desperation with research.

Vaelric continued.

Later, at the hospital, he sat beside his grandmother, Elyra.

His phone vibrated.

A message from his wife appeared, asking whether he was coming home.

He looked at the message but did not answer immediately.

His grandmother opened her eyes.

Grandmother: Come home sometimes.

Vaelric: I will.

Grandmother: Promise?

Vaelric: Promise.

That evening, Vaelric returned to the laboratory.

He began writing under the heading:

DRYVOID

He examined the possible medical chain.

Abnormal thermal perception.

Peripheral vasoconstriction.

Metabolic stress.

Inflammatory amplification.

Neurological involvement.

He considered how immune and nervous systems communicate and how severe systemic inflammation can affect brain function.

Vaelric: The body isn't freezing.

He stared at his notes.

Vaelric: It's behaving as though it is freezing.

He found another forgotten paper:

NEUROIMMUNE RESPONSE UNDER EXTREME PHYSIOLOGICAL STRESS

A note in the margin read:

Potential self-amplifying response.

Vaelric understood the danger.

A biological feedback loop.

A condition that could potentially amplify itself once established.

He wrote:

Stage 1 — abnormal thermal perception.

Stage 2 — systemic response.

Stage 3 — inflammatory amplification.

Stage 4 — neurological involvement.

He stopped.

There was no fifth stage.

The old researchers had never reached it.

Vaelric: What happens after neurological involvement?

He had no answer.

Present Day

The staircase remains silent.

Lian, Kiera, Daren, Orven, and Maevra stand together in the darkness.

Orven reveals that the voice belonged to Tervan, one of the people who died in the basement.

A sudden sound comes from below.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Everyone freezes.

Orven: That's the same.

Maevra reveals that the sound began before the first zombies appeared.

Lian: Then the sound isn't coming from them.

Maevra: That's what I've been trying to tell you.

She points toward a wall.

Maevra: There's something behind it.

Daren knocks against the wall.

THUD.

A hollow sound answers.

The wall begins to crack.

Behind it is an old metal door.

A faded symbol is visible.

Maevra: Asterion.

Lian: What is Asterion?

Before Maevra can answer—

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Three knocks come from the other side.

Nobody moves.

Then a voice speaks through the door.

Unknown Voice: Please…

A pause.

Unknown Voice: I'm still human.
